How to Decorate Your Front Porch for Fall on a Budget

Lifestyle By Anna Elizabeth-4489.jpg

Looking to (pumpkin) spice up your front porch this season? You’re in the right place. From cheeky doormats to wreaths, signs, and other #instaworthy decor pieces, I’ve gathered my favorite budget-finds for Fall in one place; along with some tips on when and where to find the cutest mums and pumpkins!

By now, you are most likely experiencing some chilly Fall weather (unless you’re reading this from some tropical place like Hawaii - in which case, consider me extremely jealous). Personally, by the time October hits each year, I’m ready to swap out my signature nude pumps and evenings downtown for fuzzy socks, warm cider, and scary movie marathons on the couch (aka: I become an overnight hermit).

Naturally, since I’m spending more time at home, I find myself wanting to decorate our place to fit my cozy and festive mood. Now, if you’re anything like me, I know you can relate to the struggle of pinning all of the #dreamhome inspo for Fall, knowing damn well that every tiny decor piece cost over $100 and was sourced by a professional stylist.

In the wise words of meme sensation Kimberly Wilkins, “ain’t nobody got time (or money) for that”.

I know you well enough to understand that you want a gorgeous front porch that allows you to enjoy this season to the fullest (and maybe make your neighbors a little jealous) without a credit card bill that makes you want to go ghost.

That’s why I’m rounding up my favorite budget-finds for the perfect Fall front porch below, plus my best tips on when and where to snag the cutest mums and pumpkins:

Mums

When to buy mums: According to experts, “the best time to buy mums is generally mid-September through October. Mums tend to wilt and turn brown in excessive heat – so as tempting as it may be to purchase them, wait it out until the temperatures have drop in your area. Mums will bloom for a month or more in cooler weather and only a few days in the heat.”

Where to buy mums: Personally, we picked our mums up at our local Home Depot. There were a variety of different colors (orange, red, and white), they were healthy and full, and surprisingly inexpensive.

I had already bought a mini basket for the small mum ($12), but the larger one came in a beautiful plant holder already ($25).

Pumpkins

When to buy pumpkins: According to experts, “anytime in the month of October in the run-up to Halloween is a perfectly appropriate time to purchase your jack-o-lantern. Pumpkins last 8 to 12 weeks after they are picked; it’s after you carve it that the clock starts ticking. When the Pumpkin is carved and hollowed out it will last around 5 to 10 days, before it wilts and smells like the rotting veg that it is.”

Where to buy pumpkins: I highly recommend picking up pumpkins from either your local Farmers’ Market or a pumpkin patch. We snagged ours at our weekly Farmers Market in Williamsburg, VA for $5-$8 each. Not only are they the most beautiful pumpkins I’ve ever seen (seriously, I almost cried when we saw them) in the light pastel-type shades, but they were also the least expensive pumpkins we have come across yet.

If you don’t have a Farmers’ Market or pumpkin patch nearby, I would recommend heading to the closest Trader Joe’s to snag some there. They seem to have a pretty good selection in late September through October at good prices too.
