Sporty Chic: Cute Tennis Outfits

From the tennis court to the gram’, sporty chic fashion is undoubtedly making a major comeback. As someone who doesn’t pass up an opportunity to make any activity a fashion moment, I am loving this trend.

It even came at the perfect time as we just made our big move to a rural neighborhood in Virginia that was built around professional golf courses, horse racing tracks and, you guessed it, beautiful tennis courts. Sam and I both hadn’t played tennis since high school, but that didn’t stop us from picking up tennis rackets the moment we moved in to get back in the swing of things.

Last weekend, we played for an hour and a half in the morning, and I have to say, I’m either more out of shape than I had thought, or I forgot how exhausting playing tennis really is. Either way, I am excited for this sport to become a part of our weekend routine to get in a little extra exercise, let off some steam and, of course, have an excuse to dress in my best “country club” outfit for the occasion (pleated tennis skirt and all).

Even if you don’t have a tennis court nearby, putting together a tennis-inspired outfit to wear while running around on the weekends or grabbing brunch with your girlfriends is perfectly acceptable.

I tend to opt for a more sophisticated tennis outfit with a cardigan or polo shirt and vintage-inspired accessories as opposed to full-on workout gear anyway. This way, I can go from the tennis court to a coffee shop or head to my favorite home decor boutiques downtown without looking like I just left the gym.

No matter what your style preference is, I have confidence that you can certainly pull off the tennis-inspired trend this Summer. You can go for an effortlessly cool look by pairing a simple pleated skirt with an oversized sweatshirt, dainty gold hoop earrings, chunky tennis shoes, and a scrunchie.

Alternatively, if you lean a bit more to the feminine and girly side, you can pair the same white tennis skirt with a pastel-colored cropped cardigan or sweater draped over a simple tank, stylish visor, and a shoulder bag.

To break it down further, today I am sharing 5 tips for putting together a sporty chic tennis outfit alongside 15 of my favorite inspirations from this trend!

01. Start with a classic tennis skirt

A basic white or black tennis skirt is truly the foundation for a stylish tennis outfit. There are several that I am loving at the moment; some come as a skort which is ideal for playing, and some come as a standard skirt which would be more suitable for brunch or a weekend look.

Remember: you can always add a pair of mini biker shorts underneath if you want the best of both worlds but only want to invest in one skirt.

If you want to step outside of the box in this area, you can certainly shop for a pleated mini skirt in a light pink, tan, or lavender shade. All of these colors would pair beautifully with a white sweatshirt or cardigan.

02. Find the perfect pair of white sneakers

Years after the “chunky Dad sneakers” started trending, I can finally say that I have fully embraced the practically of white sneakers without compromising my feminine style.

Originally, I purchased a pair (similar to these) for New York Fashion Week and although I didn’t even end up wearing them, I found that they quickly became my go-to pair of shoes for any and every casual activity afterwards.

Similar to a basic white tee, you really can’t go wrong with simple white sneakers.

03. Add a stylish cardigan or sweatshirt

Whether you are opting for a more feminine, pulled-together look or a sporty casual vibe, having a few button-up cardigans or comfy sweatshirts to mix and match with your pleated tennis skirts is key.

04. Accessorize appropriately

Now, this is where you can really flex your creative styling skills. Between visors, dainty jewelry, scrunchies, and even ankle socks, you can make your tennis look something to remember.

Note: if you are intending on playing tennis, stay away from anything too bulky, over-the-top, or fussy while actually on the courts. You can always bring a cute jewelry case and add those items afterwards if you are headed somewhere else!

05. Come well prepared

This is where the actual game of tennis comes into play. If you are ready to play on your local court, don’t forget the most important items: a tennis racket, racket bag, and tennis balls.

Personally, I think that if you are simply taking up tennis as a hobby or an alternative way to exercise, buying the most expensive tennis racket really isn’t a priority. One around $25 should do the trick!
